Not Guilty: Continuation
“What is it Annie, what’s going on? Why did he pass out?””Not now Erica, get me my car keys” She yelled as she carried Josh and ran out.
Erica soon came out with the key and they left for the hospital. She called Elvin who hurried over as soon as he could. Seeing her, he stopped.
Her hair was messy and she was on barefoot.”What… What happened?” He stuttered.
Annie couldn’t talk, tears ran down her already swollen eyes.”Erica” he called,”What happened, where’s my son?””He’s in the theater.
Calm down Elvin””What exactly happened? When I left him in the morning he was okay””It…it was… He took the drugs honey” Annie said amid tears.
“Wait, the same drugs I asked you to take in? God, Annie that was Acetaminophen, how could you let…””Honey I swear I didn’t know. I thought he was sitting with us, I didn’t know he’d go there” she sobbed.
“You didnt know? I warned you Annie!” He yelled and she broke down in tears.”I didn’t know, I didnt know” she kept crying.”Elvin, rather than doing that, pray he’s alright” said Erica.
At that moment, the doctor joined them.”How is he?” Asked Erica”He swallowed over 6 pills of the drug. I’m sorry, he died before we could complete the surgery””What did you say?” Annie asked, It was almost a murmur.
“We lost him, I’m sorry” he said and left.Annie couldn’t say a word, everything around her seemed to be spinning. She turned to Erica, she was crying.
Slowly, she turned to Elvin, he was on his knees with his head bowed, he was crying too.”This can’t be, its not possible” she thought.
She ran into the theater, there was Josh’s lifeless body about to be moved out.
“My condolences ma’am” said one of the nurses.Annie walked over to him and touched his cold face, tears ran down her cheeks. “My baby, my baby” she cried as she hugged him tight.”It was all my fault, it was all my fault”The nurse came close to console her when suddenly, she fainted.
Annie’s eyes flicked open, Erica jerked up at once.”Annie, thank goodness. Are you alright?””Erica” she called as she sat up.”I had the craziest dream just now.
In it, Josh died. Phew, I’m so glad I’m awake now. Where is he?” She asked, Erica was silent.”And hold on, why am I in a hospital?” She asked taking a look around her.
“Annie, that wasn’t a dream, Josh really is dead””Stop saying that Erica!””Annie snap out of this. Listen, he’ll be buried tonight, you need to be there.
I’m leaving to get things ready””Erica, Erica” she called but Erica didn’t look back.Annie bent down and sobbed quietly.”My… My Josh… Is really gone, he’s gone” she cried.
A nurse entered. It was the same nurse from the theater.”Ma’am” she called, Annie looked up.”May I sit?”Annie nodded.
“I’m really sorry for your loss ma’am. Honestly, I understand how you feel””How could you understand? He was just four years old.
If I had removed the drugs, he would still be alive, it was all my fault””I lost my daughter 2 years ago, I know how hard it is. But believe me, it’ll be fine.
Just have faith in God, He’ll see you through this”Another nurse entered,”Mrs Patel, you can go now. You’re fine, so is your baby. But be sure to stay well rested” she said and left.
“Go home now, and try to get some rest. If not for your sake, for the baby growing inside of you.
You’ll be alright”Annie dabbed at the tears on her face then got up.”Where’s Elvin?” She thought as she looked around for her slippers then she recalled she hadn’t worn any.
“Thank you” she said to the nurse and turned to leave.”Wait. Take my shoes, I have another pair at the office””Its alright, I don’t really care about that right now” she said and left.
She took a cab, straight to the cemetery as it was already past 7pm.Few minutes after her, Erica arrived with Elvin and Melanie, Annie’s mom.
She hugged her mom tight as she watched Elvin hurl sand into the grave.
“Its okay my child, its okay” said Melanie. After the burial, they were about getting into the car when Annie heard someone call her, she turned.
She felt her throat squeeze at the sight of the police.”Mrs Annie Patel, you’re under arrest for the murder of Joshua Patel”
